Every year I attend numerous awards ceremonies honoring the best and the brightest of the Events & Meetings industries. And every year I hear a similar thank you speech that is told with both a smile and a tear in the eye. It goes a little something like this,

“This award should really go to my husband and my children. After all, they spent every holiday watching me run around planning other people’s celebrations. My weekends were consumed with managing every detail of someone else’s bar mitzvah, wedding, party or event – and not in the stands watching my son play baseball. My family sacrificed so I could be a success.”.

Just about every person in the events industry can relate to this story. As a result, I wanted to share 2 inspiring ideas that will hopefully make these sacrifices that much easier…

An event for the children of event planners

A planner herself, Carolyn Luscombe, President of Eclectic Events in Toronto created an Industry Christmas Party for the children of event planners. She recognized that a Christmas Party just wasn’t a reality for most event planners who run small businesses. Her visions was to create the same kind of holiday work party she had such fond memories of as a child. She donated a tremendous amount of her personal time to make this happen (all with a new 5 month old baby), and the result was an amazing event!

Read a bed time story…from anywhere in the world

A new platform called Readeo is letting traveling parents connect with their children online to read bed time stories from anywhere in the world. Redeo combines digitized picture books with webcam conversations to allow parents and children to share stories while seeing and interacting with each other.

sunday spark . the care economy

This latest instalment of Sunday Spark focuses on a presentation given by Gary Vaynerchuk of Wine Library TV fame at FOWA London 09. My takeaway from his talk is that we live in a care economy. A time when being passionate about what you do helps you stand out from the crowd and when caring about people is a necessity for business survival. Gary Vaynerchuk delivers this talk in his trademark explosive way, full of expletives (so please be careful about where you play this video).

Now is the Time to Cash in on Your Passion by Gary Vaynerchuk from Carsonified on Vimeo.

As a side, I think it’s very funny how Gary goes on for 2 minutes about how most presenters are full of S%!t – all they want to do is talk about themselves and sell you things. At the end of the 10 minute talk, Gary then goes on to talk about what he’s doing in hopes you’ll buy some stuff. Oh well, good talk none the less. I hope you enjoy.

Until I saw this video, I’ll admit I knew nothing about Sylvester Stallone. Let’s put it this way, if we were playing Sylvester Stallone trivia, the extent of my answers would include, “he was in Rocky”, “he speaks funny” aaaaaand “he has a psychic Mother”. That’s it.

Unbeknownst to me, he’s got a killer story. One that should inspire. It shows us all that if you want something you have to climb, claw and sweat to get it. I hope you enjoy this presentation by Tony Robbins

sunday spark: when life hands you lemons

If you’re a Seth Godin fan, you may have seen this video. After a 37 year-old copywriter is laid off from a large ad-agency in 2008, he starts a blog for other unemployed ad professionals. Once the site launched, he decided to create a promotional video featuring the faces and stories of other laid-off execs – and how they used their new-found time to chase their real dreams. It’s now a feature film…and a ‘soon to be’ book. Not bad for a guy who was laid off.

The video made me think about a conversation I had with my Opa this past summer. It was a lazy summer day and we were sitting on the pier enjoying the sun and the sounds of the water lapping up against the wood. I think we were both deep in thought when my Opa said something pretty prolific that has stayed with me ever since. He said, “You know, Lara, you spend your whole life planning for what’s to come. Then one day, when you’re my age, you wake up and realize that there’s not much future to plan for any more.” I’ve been told my whole life that time is fleeting and that it goes by so fast. But nothing has hit me as much as what my Opa said to me that beautiful summer afternoon. I don’t ever want to look back on life and say ‘I wish I had of…’. It was on that very day that I decided to start my own business.

So, even if you weren’t laid off, like me, the Lemonade video should resonate with you. It should make you ask yourself:

  • are you doing what you love?
  • are you spending enough time with your family?
  • are you giving back?
  • are you getting out of life what you want?

If your answers are ‘no’, make your own lemonade.
