Double walled glasses are hot right now. Not only beautiful, they also serve great function. They help keep the heat from piping hot teas and coffees away from your hands, and they also keep your warm hands from heating up a cool beverage.

I suppose everyone has at least one food that upon the smell or the mere thought of it sends them catapulting back to childhood. For me, ooey gooey melted cheese sandwhiched between two buttery, toasted pieces of bread is the ultimate in memory-laden comfort food. I grew up devouring grilled cheese sandwiches. I graduated from having my crusts laboriously cut off…to painstakingly cutting the bread into 4 identical triangular pieces…to dipping it into Campbell’s Tomato Soup. I often think about grilling up one of these sandwiches – but after much bantering back and forth from myself to myself, the calorie conscious me often wins out.
Although certainly not thigh-friendly, CHOW’s 10 new takes on the grilled cheese sandwich will make any grown up do a double take:
1. Apple and Aged Cheddar Grilled Cheese.
2. Asian Pear and Gouda Grilled Cheese.
3. Grape and Taleggio Grilled Cheese.
4. Roasted Beet and Chèvre Grilled Cheese.
5. Sun-Dried Tomato, Parsley, and Manchego Grilled Cheese.
6. Sweet Hot Mustard and Jarlsberg Grilled Cheese.
7. Mozzarella, Prosciutto, and Fig Jam Panino.
8. Black Forest Ham, Caramelized Onions, and Cambozola Grilled Cheese.
9. Sautéed Jalapeño and Aged Jack Grilled Cheese.
10. Banana and Fromage Blanc Grilled Cheese.
Come on…let’s collectively replace the nouveau mini hamburgers with the uber grilled cheese!

Imagine organizing a team building or corporate thank you event for a handful of VIPs in the Val d’Isere. Your clients ride through the mountains atop skidoos with a mixture of cold air and warm sun against their skin…a feeling of total exhileration. They ride up to their igloos to indulge in a fantastic feast consisting of Fresh Hot Soup with flaky Baguettes, Foie Gras, Smoked Salmon, Charcuterie, Salad Nicoise, a Cheese Plate, Quiche, Fruit, Patisserie, Chocolate Truffles and Water…before enjoying a day of skiing.

In the latest edition of TSEvents, they’ve highlighted the hottest toys to create ambient effects at your next event.
Check out Visual FX’s LED floor or curtain panels to create splashes of colour and ambient lighting in the most unexpected places.
A company we work with quite frequently, Westbury, has introduced a new graffiti lighting system that makes projections interactive. Just imagine…you can hire artists to create temporary works of art on the sides of buildings using a laser pointer. I love this idea.
Our good friends over at Slighshot have launched WATCHOUT technology which creates seamless panorama shows as wide as you like (a single video 100 feet long by 20 feet high, for example). You can put your production on arrays or stacks of displays, or monitors scattered in different rooms all working together to create a cohesive show!

As promised, here’s the video of Guntram Prochaska creating live art using a 6′ log and a chainsaw. Tip: If you’re going to attend the show & sit in the front rows, bring a pair of goggles. Check out my previous posts (here or here) for more live art ideas.

Although a big jet lagged, I had a blast at our annual ISES gala last week!

The event was held at the beautiful & recently renovated Palais Royale, a historical venue on the shores of Lake Ontario. It started out as one of Toronto’s most famous dance halls throughout the earlier part of this century and has evolved, present day, to become a truly unique venue that retains a modern interpretation of its original architecture. ISES Toronto worked with Innovolve Group to “green up” the event and be as environmentally responsible as possible.

The venue drove the theme for the evening, which played off of the 1920s era. Entertainment included swing music & dancing from Kira Callahan’s Lil’ Savoy Swing Band, The Anthony Terpstra Seventet and Carol Lykkemark of Lykkemark Enterprises. It even featured a Rat Pack look-alike group called The Sands Trio .

One of the most delightful parts of the evening was sitting down at my stunning place settings and opening a decadently wrapped box from Churchill’s Fine Gourmet Gifts. Each of the brown boxes were tied with a gorgeous satin ribbon and topped with a sparkling jewel. Inside were my absolute favorite treats: Heavenly Pecan Bars and Hand-dipped heart cookies! (I actually love the Pecan Bars so much I ship this product from Toronto to my clients in California!).

The bars were outfitted with beautiful ice sculptures & drink luges from Ice Culture who I’ve written about before. Guests were treated to handwriting analysis by Elaine Charal and caricatures by Jan Walsh Art. And, Envision Digital Photography captured the evening (all of the photographs in this post are courtesy of Envision) and even provided their Get Flipped service throughout the evening.
What would a great event be without a great M.C.? Alan Smithson of Star Productions kept us laughing all night.

Oh, and did I mention the silent auction? We proudly raised over $7,200 that evening with a portion of the proceeds going to Dreams Take Flight. And the icing on the cake…I accepted the award for Leader Of The Year by my ISES Chapter (that’s me peeking out from behind the evergreen)!
